TOMATO RASAM
Ingredients:
- Tomatoes - 5
- Tamarind paste - 1 tbsp
- Boiled Masoor dhal - 2 tbsp
- Water - 3 to 4 cups
- Red chilli powder - 1/4 tsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
- Cumin seeds - 3 tsp
- Pepper - 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
For Seasoning :
- Oil or Ghee - 1/2 tbsp
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Black gram dhal - 1tsp
- Asafoetida - 1 tsp
- Curry leaves - few
- Rasam powder - 1/2 tsp (optional)
For Garnish:
- Finely chopped coriander leaves
Method:
Pierce the tomatoes with a fork and microwave in a microwave safe bowl for 5 minutes at 100% power. When the tomatoes cool, remove the skin and blend it in a blender.
In a large pan add oil, mustard seeds, black gram dhal, asafoetida, curry leaves and rasam powder fry for 2 to 3 minutes.
Add the mashed tomatoes, 4 cups of water and all other ingredients and cook for 5 minutes. Serve hot with boiled rice and papad.
